Tamar Valley U3A provides a stimulating learning and social environment for those aged 50 yrs young or more in our community.
The object of the Association is to facilitate the sharing of knowledge and learning among those in retirement or semi retirement and other mature interested people, within the Tamar Valley community.
Tutors and office bearers provide their service free. Our aim is to keep the costs as low as possible. The annual membership fee is $20 and entitles you to attend most classes without additional cost. However from time to time, a small additional cost may be incurred to cover costs of materials etc, depending on the course. Classes offered depend on the availability of volunteer tutors.
Volunteers for existing and new areas of interest are always welcome.
Why is it called U3A ? THE UNIVERSITY OF THE THIRD AGE.
The first age is childhood and youth. The second age is that period of our lives when we earn a living, buy a house, raise a family and generally establish who we are. The third age begins when most of our work and many of our responsibilities are behind us, allowing us to pursue new interests and activities. From the U3A point-of-view it starts with our fiftieth birthday.
DON’T BE PUT OFF BY THE NAME:
The University of the Third Age is not a university at all-at least, not in any conventional sense. It is comprised of groups of people pursuing shared interests under the guidance of a tutor who may well learn as much as s/he imparts. Subjects can be academic, general interest or hobbies. In case you were wondering, there are no exams and no homework.
WHAT CAN U3A DO FOR ME?
In the Tamar Valley’s chapter there are often many classes running, coffee mornings and other special events. Past and current classes have provided opportunities to learn a new language, paint a picture, play the ukelele, drumming, and learn basic computing. There are courses in History, Philosophy, Music, French and Italian Languages, Tai Chi and Cryptic Crosswords, amongst many others. Click here to find out what courses are available this term.
